Most probably it was cleaned using modern rust removal techniques and thus surface was damaged

Shakudo fuchikashira decorated with a dragon. This fuchikashira is made in Goto Seijo style. It was even signed but signature was removed. Tsuka is modern made with Edo Period fittings.
